MINNIE GERBER - Christening Robe and Shoes
Parents who stay behind when young married couples immigrate experience an acute sense of loss. After 38 years of family life my husband and I have been separated from our children. To express this effect on our family, I started to look at symbolic objects such as this christening robe and baby shoes. Tears are composed of salt and water and are the same ingredients found in the sea that divides my family and the solution with which I am preserving the memories of my children who have left South Africa.
